The Abcott Inn photographed at night for Hotel Motel 101. Brett Patman documented 101 traditional NSW roadside motor inns in 2018, shooting late at night or before dawn across three routes from Sydney: north to the Central Coast, west via the Blue Mountains, and south along the NSW coast.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Abcott Inn sits on a street between Wollongong and the Royal National Park, the building two-storey brick with the room doors opening onto continuous balcony walkways at each floor. The brick is pale, the trim painted in a brown along the eaves and the balustrade. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name on a backlit cream panel. The carpark is empty in the early evening. A row of small front gardens between the carpark and the road has been left to dry. A single security light at the office end throws hard cones across the asphalt. The road in front of the property is wide and quiet.

The Abcott Inn was photographed at 21:19 on 6 April 2018, at the start of the project's south-Wollongong shoot night on Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume Highway and the Princes Highway corridor to the start of the South Coast, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Four rooms face an empty car park. Cream brick, numbered doors, white metal chairs set out on a narrow concrete verandah. A corrugated steel awning runs the full length of the building. Fluorescent light spills through thin curtains. The parking bays are marked but vacant. Overhead, power lines cross a flat grey sky. Two small hanging pots sit either side of door number three. The bitumen is cold and still.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
