03 THE STORY

About this print

Four white doors run along a blonde brick row at the Abcott Inn, under a bullnose awning that carries the full length of the building. White wire chairs and tables are set out on the narrow concrete verandah outside each. Two small hanging baskets sit either side of door number three. Fluorescent light comes through thin curtains. The parking bays are marked and vacant, and power lines cross the sky overhead.

The Abcott Inn was photographed at 21:19 on 6 April 2018, at the start of the project's south-Wollongong shoot night on Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume Highway and the Princes Highway corridor to the start of the South Coast, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Four rooms face an empty car park. Cream brick, numbered doors, white metal chairs set out on a narrow concrete verandah. A corrugated steel awning runs the full length of the building. Fluorescent light spills through thin curtains. The parking bays are marked but vacant. Overhead, power lines cross a flat grey sky. Two small hanging pots sit either side of door number three. The bitumen is cold and still.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of photographs of 101 roadside motels in New South Wales, all within 170 km of Sydney: across the city, out to the Central Coast, over the Blue Mountains to Lithgow and through the Illawarra to Kiama. They were photographed at night from 29 March to 12 April 2018. The frames show numbered doors and curtained windows facing the car park, outside stairs to upper walkways, chairs by the doors and lit motel signs.
