The goddess statue Jikai on a plinth in a circular stone-kerbed bed at right. Bare winter trees and scrub along the far side.

About this print

The end wall of the No. 2 shaft winder house at Ikeshima Coal Mine, taken by a climber so dense the concrete behind it has gone, with the Z-shaped headframe and its single head sheave standing clear above the roof. The forecourt in front is concrete, laid in wide bays, and dry grass has come up along every joint. Across it the goddess statue Jikai raises one arm from a circular stone-kerbed bed. Behind that wall sits the 600 kW Koepe winder whose rope ran over the head sheave and 733 m down the shaft.

1959 to 2001 · 54 photographs

Ikeshima Coal Mine operated beneath the seabed off Nagasaki from 1959 until 29 November 2001, making it the last new coal mine to open in Japan and the last large-scale underground colliery to close. At its 1970 peak the island held 7,770 residents on a 0.86 km² rock in the Gotō Sea, housed in company-built concrete towers above a mine that reached 650 m below sea level.
