03 THE STORY

About this print

A window in the No. 2 Shaft office at Ikeshima Coal Mine, its glass long gone, looking south-west across the water toward Hikishima. A creeper has found its way in over the sill from the right and hangs into the room, and beyond it tall grass and scrub run down to the shore. The render around the opening is cracked and blistered, with a band of bare concrete exposed beneath the sill. The coal this office administered never lay under the island itself. From 1974 the mine's main faces ran out beneath the seabed toward that islet, 4 to 5 km from where this window stands.

Ikeshima Coal Mine operated beneath the seabed off Nagasaki from 1959 until 29 November 2001, making it the last new coal mine to open in Japan and the last large-scale underground colliery to close. At its 1970 peak the island held 7,770 residents on a 0.86 km² rock in the Gotō Sea, housed in company-built concrete towers above a mine that reached 650 m below sea level.
