03 THE STORY

About this print

The Ikeshima Coal-Fired Power Station, seen across a bank of silver grass and the pipe rack that runs along the road below it. The chimney rises white above the boiler house, a dark stack of plant whose ducts, platforms and stair towers have gone to rust, and in front of it stands the long turbine hall with its rows of windows, the collapsed conveyor gantry that once carried coal up to the boiler bunkers leaning against its left-hand end. An island 7 km out could not be fed from the mainland grid, so from 1967 the mine burned its own coal here to light the settlement and run the pit, with a desalination plant beside it making every drop of fresh water on Ikeshima.

Ikeshima Coal Mine operated beneath the seabed off Nagasaki from 1959 until 29 November 2001, making it the last new coal mine to open in Japan and the last large-scale underground colliery to close. At its 1970 peak the island held 7,770 residents on a 0.86 km² rock in the Gotō Sea, housed in company-built concrete towers above a mine that reached 650 m below sea level.
