03 THE STORY

About this print

The winder driver's control room in the No. 2 shaft winder house at Ikeshima Coal Mine. Rust has bloomed across every steel panel of the walls and ceiling, and the control desk carries it too: a telephone handset lies on the console, dials and switches sit in their rows on the panels behind, and four small CRT monitors are stacked on a shelf beneath a fifth. A single office chair faces the desk, and louvred blinds let hard daylight through the window on the right, where a diagonal brace crosses the glass. Through the internal window at left the switchboards of the main hall show. From this chair the driver ran a cage carrying 81 people, 733 m down and 733 m back, at up to 10 m/s.

Ikeshima Coal Mine operated beneath the seabed off Nagasaki from 1959 until 29 November 2001, making it the last new coal mine to open in Japan and the last large-scale underground colliery to close. At its 1970 peak the island held 7,770 residents on a 0.86 km² rock in the Gotō Sea, housed in company-built concrete towers above a mine that reached 650 m below sea level.
