A large spider at the centre of an orb web, hanging head down. A long abdomen banded yellow and slate blue with red at the rear. Black legs with yellow bands at the joints. Fine radial threads catching the light across the whole frame. Blurred teal and green foliage behind.

About this print
A jorō spider (ジョロウグモ, jorōgumo) hangs at the centre of her web on Ikeshima, her long abdomen banded yellow and slate blue with a flash of red beneath, her black legs ringed with yellow at every joint. The web spreads across the whole frame, catching the light in fine radial threads, and the background dissolves into blurred teal and green foliage.

Ikeshima
Ikeshima Coal Mine operated beneath the seabed off Nagasaki from 1959 until 29 November 2001, making it the last new coal mine to open in Japan and the last large-scale underground colliery to close. At its 1970 peak the island held 7,770 residents on a 0.86 km² rock in the Gotō Sea, housed in company-built concrete towers above a mine that reached 650 m below sea level.
