03 THE STORY

About this print

A dusty corridor runs through one of the residential quarters at Kenmore. The floor is bare boards, dust settled across the length of the passage. Doors line both walls at regular intervals. The corridor passes through closet space at one end before opening into the rooms beyond. The light is even, entering through small windows at the doorways. The dust holds the shape of every footfall that has been here since the buildings were sold.

Kenmore has been largely vacant since the Commonwealth sale in 2003. The complex was added to the NSW State Heritage Register on 1 April 2005 as the Kenmore Psychiatric Hospital Complex, item 2930022. The site opened in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete complex for mental health care in rural NSW, designed by Walter Liberty Vernon, the first NSW Government Architect. The State Heritage listing remains active. The residential quarters are part of the SHR-listed core.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A narrow hallway runs deep into the building, terminating at a closed timber door. Pressed metal ceilings span the corridor, their pattern still intact beneath layers of grime. To the left, a storage cupboard stands open, bare shelves thick with dust. To the right, a larger room opens out, its walls stained a faded burgundy. Floorboards are worn black underfoot. Afternoon light enters from side doorways and falls in pale strips across the dark surfaces.

Kenmore Asylum opened on Taralga Road, Goulburn, in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete mental health complex in rural New South Wales. The site was acquired in 1879 under the same Inspector-General who initiated Callan Park. The hospital closed around 2003 and was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2005.
