03 THE STORY

About this print

A large fireplace stands in an entrance hall of the main building at Kenmore. The hearth is stone, the surround stonework set into a plastered chimney breast that rises through the full height of the room. The mantel is timber, plain and unmoulded. The floor of the hall is polished timber, the boards laid wide. The walls are plastered and painted. The fireplace is the dominant feature in the room.

The main building at Kenmore sits within the Vernon-designed core. Walter Liberty Vernon, the first NSW Government Architect, designed the complex that opened in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete site for mental health care in rural NSW. The State Heritage Register listing describes the Vernon core as the finest corporate expression of Federation Free architecture in Australia and the largest single body of his work. The Commonwealth sold the property in 2003 and Kenmore was added to the NSW State Heritage Register on 1 April 2005, item 2930022.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A wide formal room with pale green walls and coffered ceilings. Four classical columns frame a red brick fireplace with an arched opening, its hearth dark and empty. Stained glass panels sit in the windows and timber-framed doors to the right. The hardwood floor is scuffed bare, streaked with dust and scattered debris. Paint peels in broad patches across the upper walls. Light enters low from the left, catching the grain of the floorboards.
