03 THE STORY

About this print

Creepers grow in under a door at Kenmore. The vines have worked through the gap at the base of the doorframe and fanned out across the floor inside. The boards of the door are weathered, the paint worn back to bare wood. The floor beyond is bare timber, the creepers running across it toward the centre of the room. The light from outside enters at floor level through the same gap. The plant has been here long enough to find its purchase in the room.

The complex has been largely vacant since the Commonwealth sale in 2003. Creeper plants have worked into several of the buildings in the decades since, growing in through doorways and broken windows. Kenmore was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register on 1 April 2005 as the Kenmore Psychiatric Hospital Complex, item 2930022. The site was the first purpose-built complete complex for mental health care in rural NSW when it opened in 1895, designed by Walter Liberty Vernon. The State Heritage listing remains active.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A pressed metal ceiling spans the room in a grid of ornamental panels, their edges darkened with grime. A marble fireplace sits against the left wall, mantelpiece bare, the hearth black. Pale green paint covers every surface. Afternoon light enters through a pair of sash windows and a glazed door, casting long shadows across a floor thick with dust and debris. A small vine creeps through the doorframe.

Kenmore Asylum opened on Taralga Road, Goulburn, in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete mental health complex in rural New South Wales. The site was acquired in 1879 under the same Inspector-General who initiated Callan Park. The hospital closed around 2003 and was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2005.
