03 THE STORY

About this print

The green-painted exit of one of the nursing quarters at Kenmore, a cleaning room door standing open to one side. The exit door is panelled timber, painted in the institutional green of the nursing quarters. The walls along the corridor are plastered and painted in the same green. The floor is timber boards. The cleaning room visible through the side door is fitted out for service work.

The complex has been largely vacant since the Commonwealth sale in 2003. The nursing quarters are part of the residential fabric of Kenmore, designed for 700 patients across 19 wards at opening in 1895. By the 1960s the hospital held over 1,400 patients. The site was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon, the first NSW Government Architect, and was added to the NSW State Heritage Register on 1 April 2005 as the Kenmore Psychiatric Hospital Complex, item 2930022.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A narrow corridor ends at two panelled timber doors. One hangs open on its hinges. The other remains closed, an EXIT sign fixed above the transom. Green-tinted glass fills the window panes, filtering outside light into a cold wash that stains the walls and ceiling. Paint has lifted from every surface. The floor is bare concrete, gritty with plaster dust and debris. Power outlets sit dead on the right wall. The air looks damp.

Kenmore Asylum opened on Taralga Road, Goulburn, in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete mental health complex in rural New South Wales. The site was acquired in 1879 under the same Inspector-General who initiated Callan Park. The hospital closed around 2003 and was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2005.
