03 THE STORY

About this print

A junction of timber doors at Kenmore. White panelled doors stand on the left, the paint peeling back to bare wood across the panels. A deep green panelled door stands to the right. An arched cornice spans the junction above the doors. The walls around the doors are plastered and painted. The peeling paint is the most worked-on surface in the photograph.

The Vernon-designed core at Kenmore is the largest body of work by Walter Liberty Vernon, the first NSW Government Architect. The arched cornice is part of the Federation Free fabric of the core, described in the State Heritage Register listing as the finest corporate expression of that style in Australia. The complex opened in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete site for mental health care in rural NSW. The Commonwealth sold the property in 2003 and the SHR listing followed on 1 April 2005, item 2930022.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A deep green door stands open at the entrance to a corridor. Paint peels from its six panels in long curls. Beyond it, white doors hang ajar at odd angles, each one leading to another room, another threshold. Plaster dust and debris cover the floor. Ornate cornicing lines the ceiling where it hasn't collapsed. Light enters from the left, catching the grit suspended in still air.

Kenmore Asylum opened on Taralga Road, Goulburn, in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete mental health complex in rural New South Wales. The site was acquired in 1879 under the same Inspector-General who initiated Callan Park. The hospital closed around 2003 and was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2005.
