03 THE STORY

About this print

A wash sink mounted on exposed pipework along one wall of one of the nursing quarters at Kenmore. Timber partition cubicles stand on the opposite side of the room. Sash windows run along the wall above the sink, the panes intact, the timber sashes weathered. The ceiling above shows damaged tiles, sections come away from the framing. The plumbing of the sink is plain steel pipe, exposed across the wall.

Kenmore opened in 1895 with capacity for 700 patients across 19 wards, the first purpose-built complete complex for mental health care in rural NSW. The nursing quarters are part of the residential fabric across the wards. The complex was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon, the first NSW Government Architect. The Commonwealth sold the property in 2003 and the NSW State Heritage Register listing followed on 1 April 2005, item 2930022.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A stainless steel basin hangs from exposed plumbing on the corridor wall. Dark timber cabinets and a partitioned booth crowd the left side of the room, their veneer still intact. Ceiling tiles sag between metal frames. A ceiling fan sits motionless. Grit and organic debris cover the vinyl floor. Pale light enters through high windows, catching the dust on every surface.

Kenmore Asylum opened on Taralga Road, Goulburn, in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete mental health complex in rural New South Wales. The site was acquired in 1879 under the same Inspector-General who initiated Callan Park. The hospital closed around 2003 and was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2005.
