03 THE STORY

About this print

Slotted doors open into a short corridor with small rooms either side at Kenmore. The doors are panelled timber, each fitted with a horizontal slot at head height. The corridor floor is timber boards. The walls are plastered and painted. Each of the small rooms off the corridor opens through a single door of the same type.

Kenmore was designed for 700 patients across 19 wards when it opened in 1895, the first purpose-built complete complex for mental health care in rural NSW. The complex was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon, the first NSW Government Architect, and sits on a 340.5-acre property on Taralga Road south of Goulburn. The Commonwealth sold the property in 2003 and the NSW State Heritage Register listing followed on 1 April 2005, item 2930022.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A narrow corridor lined with tall timber doors, each cut with vertical slotted openings. The doors stand ajar at different angles, paint worn but intact. Pressed metal panels cover the ceiling, their geometric pattern still legible under layers of grime. Diffused light enters through a frosted glass window at the far end, catching dust suspended in the still air. Blue linoleum covers the floor, cracked and lifting at the edges. A tarpaulin is tacked over one window to the right.

Kenmore Asylum

Kenmore Asylum opened on Taralga Road, Goulburn, in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete mental health complex in rural New South Wales. The site was acquired in 1879 under the same Inspector-General who initiated Callan Park. The hospital closed around 2003 and was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2005.
