03 THE STORY

About this print

One of the larger rooms in the nursing quarters at the rear of the complex at Kenmore. The room is empty of furniture. The walls are painted plaster, the floor timber boards. A pair of tall sash windows admit daylight across the room. The proportions are residential rather than clinical, sized for one or two beds rather than a ward.

The complex has been largely vacant since the Commonwealth sale in 2003. The nursing quarters are part of the residential fabric of Kenmore. The complex opened in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete complex for mental health care in rural NSW, designed by Walter Liberty Vernon, the first NSW Government Architect. The site was added to the NSW State Heritage Register on 1 April 2005, item 2930022. The State Heritage listing remains active.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A panelled door lies flat on the floor, torn from its hinges. Broken glass scatters across dark timber boards. Cast-iron radiators line the walls beneath a row of tall windows, their panes cracked or missing. Green light filters through trees outside. Above, pressed-metal ceiling panels carry an Art Nouveau floral pattern, still intact. Paint curls away from the plaster in thick sheets. Black spray paint marks the wall between the windows.

Frederic Norton Manning, NSW Inspector-General of the Insane, acquired 340.5 acres on Taralga Road, Goulburn, for £1,252 in October 1879. Walter Liberty Vernon, the first NSW Government Architect, designed the asylum complex. Kenmore opened in 1895 with capacity for 700 patients across 19 wards.
