03 THE STORY

About this print

The grand entrance to the dual-function hall at Kenmore. The room serves as both entertainment hall and chapel, with the chapel at the opposite end. The entrance is set within a moulded architrave, the timber painted and weathered. The floor of the entrance is polished timber, the boards laid wide. The walls are plastered and painted. The doors of the entrance are panelled timber, standing open.

The Vernon-designed core at Kenmore is described in the State Heritage Register listing as the finest corporate expression of Federation Free architecture in Australia. Walter Liberty Vernon, the first NSW Government Architect, designed the complex that opened in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete site for mental health care in rural NSW. The Commonwealth sold the property in 2003 and the SHR listing followed on 1 April 2005, item 2930022.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A narrow entrance hall opens toward double timber doors set within an arched frame. Coloured glass panels fill the fanlight and sidelights. Red, green, blue. A thin seam of daylight cuts between the doors and falls across the tile floor. Grit and leaf litter scatter the surface. Above, a six-arm chandelier hangs from a tongue-and-groove ceiling, its glass shades still intact. The plaster walls are bare, their lower half stained dark with damp.

Kenmore Asylum opened on Taralga Road, Goulburn, in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete mental health complex in rural New South Wales. The site was acquired in 1879 under the same Inspector-General who initiated Callan Park. The hospital closed around 2003 and was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2005.
