03 THE STORY

About this print

A bright green room at Kenmore. The walls are painted in a single tone of green across their full height. Murals of female nudes are painted along the wall above the windows, running the length of one side of the room. The floor is timber boards. The light from the windows falls across the murals and the floor below.

The complex has been largely vacant since the Commonwealth sale in 2003. Kenmore opened in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete complex for mental health care in rural NSW, designed by Walter Liberty Vernon, the first NSW Government Architect. The murals across the room postdate the original residential fit-out; authorship and date are not separately recorded. The site was added to the NSW State Heritage Register on 1 April 2005, item 2930022.

Kenmore Asylum opened on Taralga Road, Goulburn, in 1895 as the first purpose-built complete mental health complex in rural New South Wales. The site was acquired in 1879 under the same Inspector-General who initiated Callan Park. The hospital closed around 2003 and was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2005.
