03 THE STORY

About this print

Cream render and horizontal banding cover the upper facade of a vacant commercial building on Parramatta Road, the lower section marked by graffiti and a pair of event posters for Earthcore in the Park and Glass Animals. A shadow cuts diagonally across the footpath in front. The brick face of the H and J Hotel fills the right edge of the frame, and double white lines run along the road surface below. Grime has settled into the brickwork and the faded signage points to businesses long finished.

Gig posters are the most recent layer on a facade that has been carrying advertising in one form or another for most of a century. Signage along Parramatta Road runs hand-painted over vinyl over neon over LED, each commercial era leaving its mark and the next one working straight over the top without removing what was underneath. Vacancy is what makes the pasting possible: nobody objects, and the wall is worth more as a surface than as a shopfront. An empty building on a road that carried 70,000 vehicles a day by 1985 is still an advertising position, and the posters treat it as one.

A two-storey shopfront sits vacant on Parramatta Road. Cream render and horizontal speed lines across the upper facade. Art Deco bones under decades of neglect. The ground-floor windows are dark, partially boarded. Peeling concert posters cover the central hoarding. Graffiti tags the left bay. Pink ceramic tiles line the base, cracked and faded. Next door, the signage for the H & J Hotel catches hard midday light.

Parramatta Road

Parramatta Road runs west from the edge of Sydney's city centre to Parramatta, on the line of the first overland route between Sydney Town and the settlement first named Rose Hill. Convict labour cut a three-metre-wide track through the bush between 1789 and 1791, and Governor Macquarie opened the road, widened and paved in stone, on 10 April 1811. The photographs, taken from 2016 to 2018, follow it from Auburn to Stanmore, past a used car dealer's building, a motel and a milk bar.
