Inside the Terminus Hotel, a grey guest room hallway extends into shadow. Peeling wallpaper and debris line the floor, evidence of the building's gradual decay after years of disuse.

03 THE STORY

About this print

A hallway between two of the upstairs guest rooms at the Terminus Hotel turns a corner around a small landing, the timber floorboards running through the doorways on either side. The walls carry the same faded floral wallpaper that runs through most of the upstairs rooms, the pattern slightly different in each room where successive refits used a similar but not identical print. The skirting board is dark-stained timber, the paint scuffed at hand height where decades of guests passed through with luggage. A pendant light fitting hangs from the ceiling at the centre of the landing. The light reaches the hall from a sash window at the end of the corridor.

The patchwork of wallpapers along the upstairs hall records the long, undocumented history of the Terminus's accommodation rooms. Sydney pubs of this era refurbished their rooms one at a time as budget allowed; the result was usually a corridor of near-but-not-quite-matching prints. The visible building is the 1917 Tooth and Co. demolition and rebuild, and the upstairs corridor was part of the accommodation requirement that drove that rebuild. The pub closed in 1983 and the hall sat undisturbed for the 33 years that followed. The 2018 restoration refitted the upstairs as guest accommodation again, with most of the wallpaper replaced.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

The main hallway on the upper floor leads past the former guest rooms toward the bathroom at the far end.

The corner of Harris and John Streets, Pyrmont, has held a licensed pub almost continuously since 1841, under four names. Sydney's Harris Street electric tram opened in 1898 and terminated at the front door. The owners added a two-storey wing and renamed the pub Terminus around 1900.
