Regeneration

Duffys Forest, New South Wales, Australia · Photographed in Duffys Forest, 2017

Inside a derelict building at Waratah Park, sunlight highlights the persistent return of life. Lush ferns and vines grow vigorously through the collapsed roof and crumbling brickwork, green against grey decay.

From the field notes

Sandy ground breaks through tufts of green grass and dried-out clumps of dead kikuyu. Sandstone rocks sit stacked to one side, half-swallowed by new growth. Banksias and young eucalypts fill the middle distance, thin-trunked and still establishing. The canopy beyond is sparse. Overcast light flattens everything. The air looks heavy, damp.
