Boco Rock Turbine

A single wind turbine stands on the crest of a hill on the high plains south of Nimmitabel. An S-curve of asphalt runs up toward it through dry golden grass, the double white centre line tracking the bend. A cluster of small trees sits on the right slope, balancing the rotor against open pasture. A sunburst breaks through a cloud bank on the left, throwing pale light across the rolling country. The turbine reads as one machine in a wide, near-empty landscape.

It is not. Boco Rock Wind Farm carries 67 turbines across these Monaro ridges, with a generating capacity of around 113 MW. Construction began in August 2013, the farm began feeding the grid in August 2014, and it was fully commissioned that November. It was developed by CWP Renewables, built by a consortium of GE and Downer EDI, and is now owned by the Thai generator EGCO. Brett photographed this on 29 December 2018, on the Nikon Z 7.
