03 THE STORY

About this print

The Jincumbilly siding sign catches the light beside a small weathered timber shelter set on a raised railway platform, dry grass pale in the foreground. Above it the Milky Way arcs across a clear night sky, with two bright points of light burning in the upper right. The platform sleepers and the open doorway of the louvred waiting shelter are legible in the darkness. The hills have long dissolved into the horizon.

Jincumbilly sits in the Snowy-Monaro, off The Snowy River Way between Bombala and Dalgety. Brett photographed here on the night of 8 July 2020, on the Nikon Z 6. It is one of his favourite locations for night work, and the reason is the country itself: rolling plains in every direction and almost no light pollution, which is why the galaxy reads as cleanly as it does in this frame. The siding opened on 21 November 1921 with the extension of the railway from Cooma to Bombala, and closed on 9 March 1975. The line south of Cooma shut entirely in 1986. What the photograph sets against the galactic arc is a piece of 1920s branch-line furniture: a platform, a louvred shelter, and a sign still legible after fifty years without a train. The land around it is still farmed.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A single timber shelter sits on a low weathered platform at Jincumbilly. The station sign stands white against the dark, its black lettering still legible. Moss colours the pitched roof green. Grass pushes through the platform boards and creeps across old rail lines half-buried in soil. Above, the Milky Way stretches thick and unobstructed across the sky. No streetlight. No town glow. Just cold open tableland.
