New Buildings Road

Two pale wheel tracks cut along an unsealed road as it bends right into a hazy mid-ground near Wyndham on the far south coast of New South Wales. The low vantage presses close to scattered pebbles and dry tufts at the road's edge. A wire fence runs the left margin, its posts receding into the glare of a broad sunflare that bleaches the upper sky. Eucalypts line the cutting and open paddock country runs out beyond.

New Buildings is the name of the locality rather than a comment on anything built in the frame, which holds only road, fence and trees. The gap between the two is most of the appeal. Brett photographed this late in the afternoon of 25 December 2016, on the Nikon D810. This is ordinary Bega Valley back country photographed for the line of the road and the burn of the sun, with the low angle giving weight to the gravel and seed heads at the verge, and the flare taking the sky out altogether.
