03 THE STORY

About this print

A bright blue light on the far shore throws its reflection across still water beneath a multi-arched road bridge at the Bega River estuary at Mogareeka, near Tathra. Stars fill the sky above. Dark hills frame the scene on both sides, their slopes catching faint traces of distant illumination. A sandy foreshore runs to the water's edge in the foreground, grounding the long exposure in something solid, and the deck curves out across the water.

Brett photographed this on the night of 28 August 2016, on the Nikon D750, in a 20-second exposure. The bridge carries the road across the Bega River where it meets the sea at Mogareeka, on the way into Tathra on the far south coast of New South Wales. Its builder and construction date are not established in the Lost Collective facts library, so neither is asserted here. The Landscapes collection covers his wider travel photography across Australia and Japan rather than the abandoned-places work the Lost Collective is built on. The arches and the flat estuary water give the frame its structure; the star field and the single far-shore light are the event in it.
