About this print
The chimneys at Big Hill Post Office are the most visible thing left standing above the roofline. The corrugated iron around them has oxidised to a uniform deep rust, and a sheet metal cowl, added by a previous occupant, caps the flue. Each bedroom in the residence had its own fireplace; winters at 658 metres on the Southern Tablelands were cold enough that newspaper was pressed into the walls above the beds as draught insulation. The post office opened on 1 November 1869 and operated for 76 years before closing in 1945. By 2020, the building had been abandoned for decades.
