A corrugated galvanised iron water tank sits against the timber-framed wall of a derelict outbuilding. Weatherboard cladding shows heavy paint loss. A downpipe runs from the roofline down to the tank inlet. Bare winter trees stand behind the structure. The ground around the base of the tank is bare earth.

About this print
The corrugated iron water tank at the Big Hill Post Office sits where it has always sat, against the weatherboards of the residence, fed by a downpipe from the roof above. Paint peels from the cladding in long curling strips. Behind the outbuilding, bare winter trees stand against the sky. The Big Hill Post Office opened on 1 November 1869 and ran for 76 years before closing in 1945. At 658 metres elevation on the Southern Tablelands, the winters here are hard. The tank was not incidental to life in this building. It was necessary to it.
