04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A low-slung timber homestead sits under a corrugated iron roof mottled with rust. Weatherboard cladding has greyed and split. Green mould climbs the vertical slab walls beneath the verandah. A brick chimney rises off-centre. One window holds chicken wire where glass should be. The yard is wet grass and clover, tussocks of dead growth scattered through it. A galvanised water tank leans against the far end. The sky is flat, overcast, white. Everything is damp.
