04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Weathered hardwood clapboards, grey and splintered, wrap a low cottage under a corrugated iron roof streaked brown with rust. Two brick chimneys rise from the ridgeline. A rusted steel door hangs at the front entry. Galvanised water tanks sit at either end of the building, their corrugations still intact. Tussock grass and green clover press against the foundations. The sky is flat, overcast, heavy with moisture. A single wattle blooms yellow beside a bare fruit tree.
