About this print
From above, the rear residence of Big Hill Post Office reads as a series of exposed rooms, its roof gone and its walls holding on against the encroaching growth. The building is part of a two-structure complex on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, photographed in 2020. Big Hill Post Office opened on 1 November 1869 and ran for 76 years before closing in 1945. In that time it was, like most rural post offices of the period, a family residence that doubled as the local mail point. What the drone frame records is what that arrangement looks like after seven decades without a roof.
