The helium pumps at ANSTO HIFAR supplied purified helium to the reactor via a pair of double-acting diaphragm pumps. This system played a vital role in reactor maintenance by passing helium across the surface of the heavy water inside the reactor tank, collecting water vapor and preventing corrosion that could introduce contamination.

In the foreground, the cubed pulsation dampener absorbed pressure fluctuations from the diaphragm pumps, ensuring a consistent helium flow. At the back right, the stainless-steel expansion vessel functioned as a safety measure, designed to absorb excess pressure in the event of an explosion, preventing structural damage to the reactor block. However, this failsafe was never required throughout HIFAR’s 46 years of operation.

Capturing the precision engineering behind reactor safety and operational stability, this print is ideal for those fascinated by industrial processes, nuclear technology, and scientific heritage.
