Rotting apples lie scattered across the overgrown ground of an abandoned orchard in the Riverina. The air hangs heavy with the sweet, fermented scent of fruit returning to the earth.

Red neon letters spell YUMMY across the flat roof of a single-storey brick shopfront. The sign throws a deep pink wash onto wet asphalt below. White brick, breeze block venting, a slim metal bollard light on each side of the entrance. Through the glass door, fluorescent light. An OPEN sign. A yucca plant leans from the right corner. The street is empty. The sky is black. Small takeaway restaurants like this one appeared across suburban Australia through the 1970s and 1980s, many fitted with neon signage that has since been removed or left to fail. Fewer survive each year. The buildings themselves are often demolished for redevelopment or quietly repurposed beyond recognition.
