Originally settled by the Todd family in the mid-19th century, the homestead and its adjoining general store became a cornerstone of the local community, supplying goods to miners during the region’s gold rush. Despite its grand façade, the house was built from timber harvested on-site and mud mixed in a bullock-driven pit—an effort to create a mansion-like presence using only the materials available on the property.
Minimal modifications have been made since its completion in 1894, preserving the original paint, lime-washed interiors, and remnants of wallpaper dating back over a century. After decades of neglect, urgent conservation work began in the early 2000s, culminating in its sale in 2014. Today, guided by heritage experts, the homestead is being carefully restored, ensuring its unique history is preserved for future generations.
