The most modest accommodation in the hotel, these rooms once offered a simpler stay within Kinugawa Kan’s grand complex. While the river-view suites catered to luxury-seeking guests, these spaces provided a more practical option, overlooking another ryokan across the street. Even here, guests would have once been welcomed with warm hospitality, a neatly arranged futon, and the quiet comforts of traditional design.

Now, the refinement of a curated stay has given way to the weight of time. The walls are heavy with water damage, their surfaces blistered and crumbling. The ceiling has begun to cave, its broken panels strewn across the floor. Torn shoji screens hang in tatters, their delicate paper filtering pale light into the ruin.

Yet, through the decay, life finds a foothold. Ferns push through the debris, their fronds reaching toward the windows. Moss spreads across the floor, softening the edges of a space that once promised relaxation. What was once a brief escape from the everyday is now a place of stillness, where nature quietly takes back what remains.

This fine art photography print captures the quiet transformation of Kinugawa Kan’s most humble guest rooms, offering a glimpse into the fragile balance between human presence and nature’s return.
