A pale green steel casing fills the frame, bolted together with rows of heavy rivets. Red safety rails and a short ladder cross its front face. Thick pipes branch from both sides at sharp angles, their surfaces dulled to bare metal and rust. Warning plates sit either side of a small inspection port. Dust coats everything. A single industrial lamp hangs from the steelwork above. White Bay Power Station operated from 1917 to 1983, generating electricity for Sydney's tramway and rail networks. The condensers converted exhaust steam back to feedwater for the boilers. The station closed after progressive decommissioning through the 1970s. The turbine hall and its machinery remain intact inside the heritage-listed building at Rozelle.
