The turbine hall at White Bay Power Station stretches deep into grey light. Reinforced concrete walls rise three storeys on each side, their surfaces stained and peeling. A steel truss roof spans the full width overhead. Red-painted safety railings border open generator bays where machinery has been pulled out, leaving dark rectangular voids in the floor. Small windows punctuate the upper walls. Dust and grit cover every horizontal surface. White Bay Power Station supplied electricity to Sydney's tramway network from 1917. The station expanded through the 1920s and operated until final decommissioning in 1983. The turbine hall housed the generating sets that converted steam into electrical power for a system carrying over 400 million passengers a year at its peak.
